    Stop doing sit ups ?

    Check this out: http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thehumancondition/archive/2009/06/03/stop-doing-sit-ups-why-crunches-don-t-work.aspx

From the article: “We stopped teaching people to do crunches a long, long time ago,” says Dr. Richard Guyer, president of the Texas Back Institute. That’s because the “full flex” movement—the actual “crunch” part of crunches – puts an unhealthy strain on your back at its weakest point.

Consider the pushup. Not usually thought of as a great ab move, the pushup forces you to work several muscles at once: it forces your core muscles to stabilize your trunk as your arms and back work to move the body up and down. “Do you see how a pushup is a full body challenge?” says McGill. “It challenges abdominals, front of your legs, your arms and your back. That is how you use those muscles in real life.”

Like the pushup, the best exercises for back health and a firmer stomach are ones that work your abs while holding your spine straight, like planks or leg drops (done when you lie flat on your back, with your hands at the base of your spine for added support. Raise your legs up at a 90 degree angle, then slowly lower until they’re only inches from the ground. Repeat until your stomach burns and you want to throw up).

Makes sense to me. Any thoughts ?

I've never been a fan of sit ups or crunches, but I've always loved Push ups and Pull ups As you do them you'll notice other supporting muscles are also being taxed, which is the best form of exercise, IMO.

Sounds right to me but I still do them.  Push ups are outstanding and as already stated pull ups and chin ups too.  There are a number of great yoga positions that are helpbul too and require less upper body strength then push ups, pull ups etc.

I've spent ALOT of money on booze to get this beer belly.  Why would I want to waste that investment by doing situps?

I would LOVE to stop doing sit-ups.  Problem is, I never really started.  Now I don't have to!

After reading similar advice in Runners World, I cut the crunches and sit-ups and started more planks and swiss ball exercises. It made a huge difference - chronic neck and knee pain subsided, and my speed improved from stronger glutes. Just my take on it. GB

I swear by this one: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-266-13384-0,00.html They featured it in the February issue, and you can download the video tutorial from iTunes. It also requires a medicine ball. My knee pain disappeared; I have patellar tendonitis that used to give me issues after runs. Hope this helps!
